Captain Tommy's unparalleled expertise has helped his clients land more than their fair share of trophy fish, including many redfishweighing up to 30 pounds. His vast knowledge and passion for the sport have earned him many impressive accolades, making him anauthority in the fishing community. He is a legendary captain that locals revere and that redfish fear!
THE FISH WHISPERER
Captain Tommy Pellegrin isn't just any fishing guide. His impressive resume includes guiding anglers to an astounding 41 different fish species ranked in Louisiana’s top 10, as well as assisting with several world records on his tours. His personal crowning achievement? A world record 12 lb. red snapper on a fly rod!
This time of year, there is one main targeted species for Captain Tommy and one of his favorites to fight as well – the celebrated Louisianna Redfish.
GRASS PIGS, RATTLE SHRIMP, & CRACKED CRAB
Captain Tommy’s got a few tricks up his sleeve when it comes to inshore fishing for redfish. This prized species is a great target for anglers seeking both a challenge and reward. The strategy? It's a mix of technique, timing, and selecting the right gear.
In the marshlands, where the water is often murky, Captain Tommy's go-to bait is a 1/4-ounce jighead paired with a swamp gas-colored Grass Pig from Berkley. The effectiveness of this bait is undeniable and Captain Tommy swears by it, as it perfectly mimics the appearance of a local Cocahoe Minnow, one of the redfish’s favorite prey.
But as with all species, the approach changes with the seasons in an attempt to match the hatch. During the winter, Captain Tommy trusts the durability and action of Cullshad, a tough bait that performs exceptionally well in colder months. And when the water gets too muddy, it’s time to break out the popping cork with a market shrimp or rattle shrimp to get the job done.
FRESH MEAT FOR BIG BULLS
For those tracking down the big bulls—the monster redfish of the world, measuring over 27 inches and weighing between 15 to 30 pounds— Tommy swears by live cracked crab as bait, but with a crucial caveat: the crab must be fresh. “Day-old or iced out crabs just won’t do the trick,” says theCaptain. “They have to be alive when you crack ‘em to really get those record-breaking bites.”
83 REDFISH'S WORST NIGHTMARE
Fishing with Captain Tommy is not all about the technique, though—it's about being at the right place at the right time. His strong and unrivaled understanding of the redfish's habits is what puts him above others in the marsh.
When the larger schools of redfish are most active, Captain Tommy takes his clients to fish deep bayous with sharp curves and current lines. These waters, sometimes 80 feet deep, offer a haven for redfish as they come up to feed in the 12–15-foot flats before retreating down in the pocket to rest.
His best day this year with clients saw 83 redfish landed, each weighing around 20 pounds, and they were back at the dock by noon—a truly unforgettable day on the water.
CAPTAIN'S CHOICE
For Captain Tommy, gear matters just as much as bait. When it comes to landing those record-breaking fish that Tommy is so famous for, he has always relied on the tried-and-true PENN Battle III reel and more recently, the all-new PENN Battle IV 4000 size reel equipped with 30-pound braid and a circle hook.
Along with the PENN Battle III & the new PENN Battle IV 4000 reels, Captain Tommy relies on an arsenal of PENN rods and combos that can even often feature Fenwick inshore rods as well. These rods with a combination of 20-pound braided line, connected to a 25–30-pound monofilament leader using a double uni-to-uni knot, ensures that the gear can withstand the relentless fight of a massive redfish.
